Man charged after allegedly grabbing a woman and trying to sexually assault her on Fredrick Street, Broome

A 43-year-old man has been charged after allegedly grabbing a woman and trying to sexually assault her on a Broome street. Police say the woman — aged in her 40s — was walking along Fredrick Street about 6.40pm on Monday when he allegedly grabbed her from behind. “It will be further alleged the man physically assaulted the woman before attempting to sexually assault her,” a police spokesperson said. Fortunately, the woman escaped and reported the incident to police. Broome detectives immediately launched an investigation and arrested and charged the 43-year-old the following day. The man, from Kununurra, was charged with deprivation of liberty, aggravated indecent assault and assault occasioning bodily harm. He is due to face Broome Magistrates Court on Wednesday. Kimberley Supt. John Hutchinson said Perth detectives were sent to Broome to assist with the investigation and assured the community it was an “isolated incident”. “I would like to reassure our community the WA Police Force treat any offence involving violent or predatory behaviour very seriously and a team of specialist detectives from Perth travelled to Broome to assist with investigative actions,” he said. “This was an isolated incident.”
