The Looma Lady Eagles have jumped to the second spot on the ladder after an action packed round of WKFLW at the weekend where they defeated the Broome Saints in a thriller. Down at Haynes Oval on Saturday afternoon, the Looma Eagles and the Broome Saints went head-to-head in a thriller of a match which saw both teams neck and neck during the first half. The Saints managed to take the lead during the first half despite Looma keeping the ball in their forward 50 for most of the half thanks to some solid defensive efforts from Looma’s Sophira Buaneye, 2.1 (13) to 2.0 (12). Coming into the third term Looma’s attack pulled out all the stops to give themselves a two-goal lead while their defence made some excellent plays with Candice Skinner and Kate Ditchburn consistently delivering the ball to the forward line. But both teams failed to fully capitalise on a number of good set-ups for goal, leaving the game in Looma’s favour coming into the final quarter, 4.1 (25) to 2.1 (13). A goal from Looma’s Lyla Pindan broke the stalemate early on in the final term after a hard-fought battle over the ball with Saints’ Bethany Moore. Massive efforts from Saints’ Hayley Garlett in the backline kept the Looma attackers on their toes but it wasn’t enough to hold back the tide with the Eagles managing to slot another goal to keep them in the lead up until the final siren, 5.1 (31) to 3.2 (20). The rest of the WKFLW teams had a bye this week.
