Lady Eagles no match for switched-on Saints

Saints have continued to solidify themselves atop the WKFL women’s ladder, recording a third consecutive victory on Saturday, July 27.

The Saints were up against inaugural premiers Looma Lady Eagles at Haynes Oval, as both teams looked to maintain their good form ahead of the finals.

A goal from Peta Merrilees proved the advantage for Saints who led by seven points at the first break.

The Lady Eagles looked to stay in close contention but were unable to convert, while Saints extended their lead with a major from Hayley Pearson and several behinds to lead 2.3 (15) to 0.0 (0) at half-time.

Saints continued to dominate the field with a goal from Helen Ockerby, while the Lady Eagles continued struggling to get the ball in their forward 50.

At the final change Saints led by 22 points.

In the last quarter Looma improved with a goal through Latifa Banjo but the Lady Eagles were just no match for the Saints. At the final siren, Saints emerged victorious 4.4 (28) to 1.4 (10).

Elsewhere, Derby Tigers dominated on home turf to dispatch the Peninsula Bombers 12.7 (79) to 4.0 (24) while the Cable Beach Greenbacks smashed the Broome Bulls 8.12 (60) to 0.0 (0).

In round 13 the Saints and Cable Beach Greenbacks square off in a Friday night clash, Broome Bulls will take on Peninsula Bombers, Derby Tigers meet Bidyadanga Emus and the Looma Lady Eagles will have the week off.
