Labor picks Broome resident and Yamatji man Jeremiah Riley to contest Durack at Federal election

Long-term Broome resident and Yamatji man Jeremiah Riley has been announced as the Labor candidate for Durack for the upcoming Federal election. Hailing from the Gascoyne-Murchison region near Meekatharra and growing up in Kununurra, Mr Riley has extensive experience across WA’s North West, working as a native title lawyer, business consultant, and Ardyaloon Aboriginal Corporation chief executive. He was instrumental in handling the James Price Point LNG project and has been a vocal advocate for strong traditional owner representation at a State and Federal level through his involvement with five native title bodies corporate across the Kimberley. Mr Riley will go up against Liberal Member for Durack Melissa Price, who received 64.8 per cent of the two-party preferred vote at the 2019 Federal election — a +3.7 per cent swing on her previous result. Durack covers the northern Wheatbelt of Western Australia from Merredin to Geraldton, as well as Carnarvon and the vast northern mining and pastoral regions of the Pilbara and Kimberley districts. Major centres in the north include Newman, Karratha, Dampier, Port Hedland, Broome and Derby. The seat has been held by the Liberal Party since its creation in 2010.
