Kimberley sport groups receive funding to assist with travel costs

Two Kimberley sporting groups have been selected to receive vital funding from the Cook Labor Government to assist with travel costs incurred on participants competing in championships across the State. Garnduwa’s Kimberley Spirit Football Program and Broome Soccer Association were both named successful appplicants of the Active Regional Community Grants Program and North West Travel Subsidy Scheme created earlier this year. The funding supported KSFP’s Colts football team travelling to Perth to compete at the Country Football Championships on July 6, where Kimberley trio Gilbert Barli, Jevahnis Badal and Tayvon Stretch were named CBH Group Colts Championship Allstars. Athletes from the Broome Soccer Association were also granted funding to travel to Newman to compete in Football West’s North West Championships later this month. Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman said the initiatives gave people living in regional areas access to opportunities to excel in their chosen sport and recreation activities. “Sport and recreation play an important role in the lives of people in our regional communities, so it is vital that opportunities are provided to encourage participation and support organisations,” he said. “Some of our best athletes and competitors come from regional WA, and they often face extra challenges such as distance from events.” Sport organisations and members from the regions are encouraged to check whether they are eligible for support from the programs.
