Kimberley footy: ruthless Broome Bulls women put sword to Saints in 89-point drubbing

The cellar-dwelling Broome Bulls have snapped a five-game losing streak in the most emphatic fashion, notching up the third highest score in the West Kimberley women’s football league for 2021 with an 89-point win against the Saints. Having come within one kick of toppling the highly-fancied Looma Eagles the previous round, Broome’s determination was clear from the outset in their relentless forward pressure on Friday night. They were rewarded early with a set shot goal to Joanne Dick which sailed through for a major to get the scoreboard ticking. Saints won the ball from the restart and moved forward with gusto, but couldn’t set up for a shot on goal in what would prove to be their only inside-50 for the game. From that moment on the game belonged to the red V’s. With the ball locked deep in attack the Bulls kept the scoreboard ticking over with regularity right through the game. The Saints committed heavily to the ground ball contest and laid on plenty of tackles, but every time the ball spilled loose the Bulls forwards found themselves in the right place at the right time. The work in the centre of the ground from the likes of Jessica Cox and Kelsey Whelan set the tone as the Saints struggled to even get beyond centre-field. Kian Fancote and Bonnie Varga scrapped hard for possession early for the Bulls and, as the game wore on, proved dominant on the mark. It was a pleasing display for the Bulls faithful as the women kept their foot on the throttle even when the game was done and dusted after half time. Erin Luchetti and Emma Pager’s ball-winning efforts in what at times became very congested play ensured the Bulls kept the blowtorch on to be sitting at 8.13 (61) to 0.0 (0) a the final break. And the bottom-placed franchise only lifted further in the final quarter, booting 4.4, including a goal mere seconds after the restart, to finish off the match 12.17 (89) to 0.0 (0). The Bulls’ efforts eclipse Cable Beach’s 12.16 (88) to 0.0 (0) demolition job against Bidyadanga in round six and sit just short of Looma’s 98-point win against the Saints in round eight and Derby’s 96-point win against the same side in round nine. For the Saints who had such a promising start to the season the loss marked a third straight mauling at the hands of their opponents. The result puts the Bulls one win away from lifting themselves off the bottom of the table.
