Kimberley community to commemorate 109th anniversary of Anzac Day

As the dawn of April 25 approaches the Broome community is set to gather in solemn remembrance and respect at Bedford Memorial Park. This year marks the 109th anniversary of the Anzac troops’ landing on the shores of Gallipoli during World War I, a moment of profound historical significance and national pride for Australia and New Zealand. The dawn service will pay tribute not only to the brave souls of the Gallipoli campaign — where 60,000 Australians and 18,000 New Zealanders made the ultimate sacrifice — but also to the valiant efforts and contributions of current and former serving members involved in more recent conflicts. Led by the Broome RSL sub-branch, the day’s proceedings will commence with a traditional march at the first light of dawn, about 5am, along Weld Street. This solemn procession will see frontline service members, decorated veterans, and their families leading the community. At the conclusion of the march, a series of addresses will be delivered lead by RSL president Keith Vomiero. As daylight breaks over Broome, wreaths will be laid at the memorial and there will be a moment of silence broken only by the solemn strains of the Last Post. The service will conclude with a traditional Anzac breakfast at the Broome RSL on Robinson Street. In Derby, residents will march, starting at 5am, from the Redshed going to the front of the Civic Centre where a traditional Anzac ceremony will be held with a community breakfast on offer inside afterwards. In Fitzroy Crossing, the ceremony will be in front of the visitor centre at 6am with breakfast also available after the service.
