Preparations for Broome’s Mardi Gras 2020 are under way with a new child-friendly event introduced to the three-day festival.

For the first time, Broome Pride will be hosting Drag Queen Storytime at Studio 34 on February 29 in a bid to engage children in the Mardi Gras festivities.

Parents and children, from toddlers to teens, will be able to meet Drag Territory queens Vogue MegaQueen and Fairy Ferocia Coutura and enjoy stories, dance and singing.

Broome Pride president Lucy Falcocchio said introducing Drag Queen Storytime was a way to show its longstanding commitment towards inclusivity.

“Over the past few years, I have been contacted by community members asking if Broome Pride would be hosting any family-friendly events for Mardi Gras and I’m so pleased that this year we are finally able to meet their requests by introducing Drag Queen Storytime,” she said.

“Drag Queen Storytime is family focused, allowing parents to accompany their children to an event and enjoy the celebration.”

Ms Falcocchio said a family-friendly event such as Drag Queen Storytime was always something Broome Pride wanted to do and would not have been able to do so without local community support.

“It’s the people of Broome who support Broome Pride events who also inadvertently support these initiatives and allow them to happen,” she said. “This is just another way in which we are able to ‘give back’ to the community who support us. It would be great to be able to have something like this and many other family-friendly events as options for outings for Broome families.”
