Harold Tracey re-elected for second term as Shire president after resounding election win

Harold Tracey will continue his reign as Shire president after receiving six of nine votes from fellow councillors. It was widely understood Cr Tracey would nominate for the position, after a number of years at the helm of the local government area. Desiree Male was elected deputy president unopposed after receiving a nomination from Cr Tracey. It comes after Saturday’s election which saw Cr Tracey, Cr Male, Peter Taylor and Philip Matsumoto re-elected. Councillor Elsta Foy was the only other person nominated for president, after receiving a nomination from councillor Fiona West. In nominating Cr Foy, Cr West said she felt uncomfortable with the culture of council. “Sometimes I feel like I can’t find my voice and say what I’d like to say in council chambers,” she said. “I’m often frightened to the point where I shake.” In response to Cr West’s comments, Cr Tracey said he had previously reached out to Cr West and offered to talk about why she felt uncomfortable, but hadn’t received a response. Cr Tracey and Cr Male will sit as Shire president and deputy president for the next four years, with their terms expiring in October 2025.
