Government obsession with vanity signs and billboards a pointless exercise which pollutes our landscape

Hello. I am here today to get on my high-horse about one of the most insignificant government issues plaguing Western Australia. This is one of the most visible problems in our State, and also one of the most pointless. It has spread its ugly reach from Kununurra right down to Esperance and everywhere from major regional cities to the most remote beauty spot. I am of course talking about signs. I have been fortunate to be able to get around (geographically) in my line of work over the years and everywhere I go there seems to be a hoard of government signs telling me who funded what, who opened things, how government is great and when things will happen. This was rammed home for me at the Kununurra boat ramp recently when I was trying to get a nice photo but the dumb government “hey look at us we funded this thing” signs were in the way of the shot I wanted. Yes, I can hear you all agreeing with me this is a major problem deserving of prime real estate in a newspaper. Presently, State Government officials have been gallivanting across WA for regional skills summits and boy, don’t we know about it. It is good to see them getting out and talking face-to-face with people. But there is no need for them to go and print signs in Labor red for local members to hold in happy snaps at each location. None. Zero. Zilch. It is lower than pointless. The Labor Government is not the only lot guilty of this daft practice — far from it. Walk around any regional town in WA and you will find plenty of fading Royalties for Regions signs littering our landscape — everything from a small signpost at a playground to large billboards in front of major projects. So hi, government sign people, please stop. Views of our beautiful landscape — the best in the world — and nice buildings don’t need to be ruined by pointless vanity signs.
