Funding path eased for proposed Derby tidal lock and port development

A multimillion-dollar proposed lock development at Derby Port has been modified to reduce its reliance on taxpayer funds for economic viability. The development would see a lock system built at the port which would have space for military and bulk export vessels. A tidal lock would allow vessels access to a permanent shoreside excavated basin with room for roll-on, roll-off cargo, a marina, and separate defence and commercial wharfs. Project partners Australian Capital Equity and Warburton Group have a five-year lease agreement with the Shire to move the development ahead. Shire councillors went behind closed doors at the May council meeting to vote on an amendment to the proposal dubbed a milestone modification. Shire of Derby-West Kimberley president Geoff Haerewa said that modification came about as the development was no longer as reliant on Federal Government funding to make the project viable. “Now they can start developing a business plan around what is in the area and what future business could be in the area which could support a port,” he said. “This will suit the market and be able to grow if the market grows. “That is then dramatically reducing from them, depending on the Federal Government (funded) plan they had.” Mr Haerewa said the Shire would do what it could to help other businesses link up with the project partners to make it viable. A spokesman for ACE and Warburton said the partners were continuing to work on a viable plan.
