First quarter Bidyadanga Emus blitzkrieg sets up big win over Peninsula Bombers in Broome

A first quarter Bidgy blitzkrieg set up a resounding 73-point win for the Emus against The Bombers at Father Matheson Oval on Saturday afternoon. The Emus were on fire from the outset, booting 6.0 in the opening term to set the tone for the match. After a few missed opportunities early Zachariah Watson started the procession, pouncing onto a loose ball for an easy kick in front of goal. That fast start had the Bombers shell-shocked — they managed two goals early but looked completely out of their depth in the face of an Emus forward pack intent of locking the ball in their attacking 50. As the game wore on the Emus’ accuracy went wayward but their hunger in the contest remained a highlight. By contrast the Bombers allowed uncontested forward entries and marks with concerning regularity, and often wound up on the back foot after attacking plays due to a failure to man-up. The half time scoreline blew out to 9.4 (58) to 2.3 (15), and there was more pain on the other end of the break for the Bombers. Jamarlius Jubadah played a critical role swooping on the ball from the tap, while Emus midfielders Huzi Hunter, Kelwyn Muller, Trent Brolga and Kai Shadforth seemingly found themselves in every contest. While the Emus competed for every possession, Bombers players were too often found milling around the outside waiting for something to happen. The frustration at that lack of pressure showed in the Bombers’ defence, with Tyron Cox in particular vocal on the field about manning-up and providing leads. With the game out of reach the Bombers did show glimpses of what they were capable of in the final term. Sellus Cox and Solomon Peumorra looked dangerous when given space near the goal and Geoffrey Clark proved a valuable target for forward entries. It was too little, too late, however. The Emus rallied late to pile on another four goals, ending the game 15.12 (102) to 4.5 (29). Earlier in the day the fifth-placed Bulls shocked a high-flying Looma in a six-point upset win. The nail-biting game was split by one kick, with the Bulls winning 10.6 (66) to 9.6 (60) to keep in touch with the top four.
