Derby basketball star Marcellus Bear named in under-18s State team for national titles

Two young Derby-based basketballers have been named among the best young talent in WA and will travel to Victoria in April to represent the State. Straight off the back of his MVP performance for the Derby Junior Wizards, Marcellus Bear was last week named in the WA country men’s under-18 State team. The selection will see him join some of WA’s brightest young talents at the Basketball Australia U18 National Championships from April 10-17 at the Ballarat Sports and Events Centre in Victoria. It’s not the first time Marcellus has been noticed either, with the youngster previously selected in the 2020 WA under-16 country men’s team. It comes after he helped his local team, the Derby Junior Wizards, to an undefeated season with a 36-11 win over Bloodline in the grand final in late January. Another Derby player, Zimmarley Williams-Wilson was also selected as a reserve for the team, meaning the tiny town with a population of just 3500 people was able to secure two of 19 spots.
