Eleven winners of the 2025 National Landcare Awards have been announced, with the Dampier Peninsula Fire Working Group scooping the First Nations Landcare collaboration award.

The awards recognise and champion individuals, groups and organisations making a tangible impact in sustainable agriculture, conservation and community engagement.

Kimberley Land Council Nyul Nyul head ranger Preston Cox said the award acknowledged the ongoing work and effort the group make in protecting land.

“Extremely proud this Indigenous-led group has been recognised nationally,” he said.

“It’s a really big deal for us, when we started over 10 years ago, we thought enough is enough of seeing our land burn — and here’s the proof of what can be achieved”.

Bardi Jawi ranger Phillip McCarthy agreed it was a great honour.

“It feels really good, was amazing to come all this way,” he said. “Over the years we’ve worked collaboratively, and it really matters and it’s great to get this recognition.”

The 600-guest event was hosted by Costa Georgiadis, a long-time Landcare ambassador, at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Landcare Australia chief executive Shane Norrish, praised the winners and highlighted the power of community action in protecting Australian land.

“Each winner has shown an extraordinary level of effort and commitment that stands out nationally, they are shining examples of how leadership and community action can leave a lasting legacy for the environment and future generations,” he said.

Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said grassroots actions of Australian communities committed to a sustainable future were of vital importance.

“Landcare represents the best of Australian communities — volunteer-led, grassroots and deeply committed to sustainability,” she said.

“These awards highlight the innovation and passion driving sustainable agriculture.”
