Clubs, athletes get the year off to sensational start
Former Broome Barracuda Zac Incerti was adamant he was ready for the fast lane at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast after watching Australia’s shock 4x100m relay victory over the US at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Broome siblings Seth and Sage Lovell were selected to represent Australia in the men’s and women’s under-20 squads at the World Junior Ultimate Championships in Canada. It was the second successive time they were selected for the tournament.
The Broome Barracudas wasted little time proving themselves against fierce competition in Perth after a 14-member squad took home 38 medals in the 2018 WA SunSmart Country Championships.
Broome’s up and coming basketballers got a chance to show their talents and beat school holiday boredom in a junior basketball carnival held at Broome PCYC. It was the first event to showcase the upgraded basketball hoops at the PCYC basketball courts.

Derby product Brendon Ah Chee looked to make a fresh start with the West Coast Eagles after returning to his home State through a trade by Port Adelaide.
Young athlete shined
All-round athlete Stephen Carson was set to carry the weight of Broome on his shoulders at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Sydney after a tremendous showing at the WA State Championships.
Local footballers with AFL dreams were put through their paces in a trial session for the Kimberley Spirit under-19s team, headed by newly appointed head coach Clint Ernst.
Banfield had a crack
Broome’s Bailey Banfield loomed as a round one bolter after an impressive pre-season effort in Fremantle’s 29-point win over the West Coast Eagles in a scratch match, while second-year West Coast rookie Francis Watson looked to prove himself as a round one contender.
NRL WA and Broome Touch Association joined forces to create a combined rugby league and touch program to teach children the fundamentals of both sports. The 12-week junior program was the first of its kind in WA.
Freo took Broome
Young footballers of Broome got their chance to showcase their talents to former Fremantle Dockers player and Next Generation Academy coach Tendai Mzungu when the Fremantle Next Generation Academy ventured to Broome for a talent day.
A season of hard work and determination paid off for the Orl Blacks after they defeated Greenbacks to win the Broome Basketball Association Wet Season 2017-2018 premiership.
Beach 2 Bay
More than 50 swimmers had a reason to feel exhausted after taking part in a 20km swim at Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre for the inaugural Beach 2 Bay Virtual Swim. The distance reflected the space between Cable Beach and Roebuck Bay instead of the traditional Rottnest Channel Swim.
Swimmers made waves
Broome Barracudas continued their success with they travelled to the Pilbara to smash records and a bit of gold. The 25-person squad competed in the North West Open Championships in Karratha.
Young basketballers got the chance to beat school holiday boredom and hone their skills with the best in the Kimberley Basketball Academy’s first three-day camp. Perth Wildcats legends Tony “The Bear” Ronaldson and Paul Rogers were on hand to teach valuable skills to the children alongside the KBA coaches.
Taste of elite
A selection of young footballers across the Kimberley got the chance to experience a taste of the elite level when the 2018 North West Academy ventured to Perth for a four-day camp.
Women’s league expanded
New competition arrived in the WKFL Women’s league when it welcomed the Peninsula Bombers and the Bidyadanga Emus into the league during a pre-season lightning carnival, while the Men’s season kicked off with a bang.
Feet on the pedal
The Kimberley’s Gibb River Road was filled with more than 60 teams of cyclists making the journey from Derby to Kununurra for charity in the 2018 Gibb River Road Challenge. In the lead-up, the National Fat Bike Championships were held at Cable Beach in an Australian-first.
Tennis great Todd Woodbridge visited Broome Primary School, presenting students with new tennis racquets and engaged in on-court activities as part of a national campaign to encourage kids to play tennis.
Girls served up aces
Olympian Danielle Kettlewell gave young female tennis players valuable advice on following sport dreams and being a conscious athlete when she visited Broome during a Girls in Tennis camp.
Kimberley v Pilbara
The best of the West Kimberley Football League managed to win some bragging rights over their North Pilbara counterparts in a scratch match for the inaugural White Ribbon Cup.
Kimberley runners Damien Crispin and Torey Rickerby began the journey of a lifetime after being selected for the 2018 Indigenous Marathon Foundation squad heading to New York City.
Broome racing kicked off
Broome celebrated the WA Day long weekend in style when the Broome Turf Club’s racing season kicked off for 2018. The main event for the day, the Broome International Airport Sprint, produced an 80/1 winner in Salamaat.
Bullets fended off Sharks in the Broome Touch Association’s division 1A grand final to end the first half of 2018. Roey Roosters were named division 1B premiers, while Exploders won the division 2 competition.
Motocross riders from across WA zoomed in on Broome to compete in the Broome Motocross 2 Day Championships. Travis Mahony was the big winner of the tournament, collecting several trophies.
Broome Netball Association has plenty of reasons to smile after shining bright on the courts in the North West Netball Championships in Port Hedland. Broome’s 14 and under team and its senior division 1 team won their respective tournaments while a number of players were recognised for their on-court efforts.
An intensely close grand final did not stop Islanders from completing a perfect season run to become the Broome Beach Volleyball premiers.
Jets were off to flyer
Broome and Derby’s rugby league enthusiasts came together to compete in a State of Origin style clash, marking the Broome Jets Rugby League’s first official match.
