After the first night of vote counting, Chris Mitchell has been tentatively elected as the new Shire of Broome President with other councillors to be confirmed after counting resumes tomorrow (October 22). Counting must still be officially verified by the West Australian Electoral Commission but even without preference votes Chris Mitchell has won the presidency by a landslide. The Shire stalwart, who celebrated 30 years on council last year, won 1156 primary votes, 646 votes ahead of presidential candidate Brendan Renkin who held the second most primary votes (510). Presidential candidate Michael Leake had the least support with 157 primary votes. Vote counting will resume tomorrow morning at 9am (October 22) with councillor results to be declared later in the day. More to come.
