Cable Beach vehicle access ramp closure extended after erosion damage

A vehicle ramp to the world-famous Cable Beach, originally closed to protect turtles, will remain shut after heavy rains caused erosion which could cause “significant risk to vehicles”. The temporary closure of Cable Beach north of the rocks to vehicles to protect turtle hatchlings officially ended on February 1, however, will remain closed for the foreseeable future after wet-season rains damaged the route. A Shire of Broome spokesperson said they were unable to provide a concrete re-opening date, as there were ongoing assessments being undertaken to ensure it was safe for vehicles. While some Shire and emergency vehicles, and vehicles with permits, may be seen north of rocks during the closure, anyone who sees a vehicle they believe is not permitted is urged to call Shire rangers on 9191 3456. It comes after, in its October 2022 council meeting, Shire councillors unanimously passed a resolution to see a full closure of the ramp between December and January each year to protect the flatback turtle population — the main species that nests at the iconic beach. Speaking to the Broome Advertiser after the vote, Shire of Broome President Harold Tracey said the decision was based on hard evidence found through research conducted by the Yawuru Park Council working group, which was brought onto the project after a petition with the signatures of 1094 Broome residents was brought before the council in June 2021. In addition to YPC’s recommendation, Shire of Broome opened the matter up for public comment, to which 92 per cent of contributors were in favour of the move. “The response has been overwhelming in support of these guys,” Cr Tracey said. “We have no argument - we can say, hand on heart, that we’ve got evidence...and the community agrees with us.” The decision was welcomed by Native Animal Rescue coordinator Chris Mitchell who recalled several cases where hatchlings were found in wheel ruts and others who may have been accidentally run over by a vehicle.
