Cable Beach dog dies after being shot with arrow while asleep in owner’s backyard

WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENT A cowardly act of animal cruelty has sent shockwaves through the Broome community after a family dog was fatally shot with an arrow in the early hours on a Cable Beach street. Police are investigating the incident which took place on July 12 between 6am and 7am on Chippindall Place, where it is alleged the dog was sleeping on a chair in its owner’s backyard before being shot with an arrow in its back. A house has been searched in relation to the attack, with inquiries still ongoing. Images have circulated on Facebook of the injured dog before it was taken to Broome Veterinary Hospital, alerting locals of the attack and to keep an eye on their pet. RSPCA Broome inspector Wayne Moroney said animal cruelty was a serious criminal offence and those found guilty could face a maximum penalty of $50,000 fine or five years imprisonment under the Animal Welfare Act 2002. “Sadly, animals shot with arrows is something RSPCA WA does encounter from time to time in Broome,” he said.
