Broome’s Pearl Coast gymnasts compete against best in WA at State junior championships

After fundraising hard all year, young gymnasts of the Pearl Coast Gymnastics Club in Broome are finally off to compete in the 2021 Junior State Gymnastics Championships in Perth. Held at the Loftus 24/7 Gym and Recreation Centre in Leederville from Thursday until Sunday, the young gymnasts will compete against clubs from across Western Australia for the chance to be crowned the State champions in their respective disciplines and levels. This year, Pearl Coast were fortunate enough to have 18 young emerging athletes qualify in the women’s artistic and men’s artistic gymnastics, with the children having trained for several months in the lead-up to the competition. Artistic gymnastics places unique demands on the young athletes, who need to demonstrate strength, agility, co-ordination, speed and stamina. Pearl Coast head coach Amber Rann said artistic gymnastics involved several disciplines, including floor, rings, pommel horse, vault and bars. “We have been fundraising all year to give our gymnasts this fantastic opportunity to compete in the big smoke,” she said. “We’re so proud of their efforts and feel confident heading into the competition. “Wish us luck, Broome.” Ms Rann said she hoped exposure to the competition would bring awareness to the club and motivate people in and around Broome to get involved. A second stint of the competition will take place from October 14-17, featuring aerobic and aerobatic gymnastics.
