Shire calls for witnesses as Broome’s Male Oval destroyed by hoons overnight

Just after the 2022 Broome cricket season kicked off over the weekend, Broome’s main pitch has been torn up by hoons on a joy ride. On Tuesday August 9, Broome residents awoke to an eyesore of torn up grass and tyre marks strewn across Male Oval that sits on the edge of Chinatown. The oval, which can be seen when entering Broome, often hosts travelling events like the Great Moscow Circus and various fairs, and is also used by the Broome Cricket Association — who have just began their season. It is the latest in a string of crime involving motor vehicles in the world famous tourist destination. Shire of Broome President Harold Tracey urged anyone who had witnessed the vandalism to contact the local police. “This kind of mindless vandalism is very frustrating for the Shire and the Broome community as a whole,” he said. “It is totally pointless and has a negative impact on how our town is perceived, given the central location of Male Oval. “Shire staff will be working to remediate the damage, but ultimately the idiotic actions of the perpetrator have wasted staff time and ratepayers’ money. “Shire officers are working with police to review CCTV in an attempt to identify the offending vehicle – if anyone in our community witnessed this vandalism, I’d urge them to contact the local police.”
