Broome’s little athletes win a swag of medals at Country Championships in Bunbury

The next generation of Broome athletes have continued to show prowess on and off the track after putting on commendable performances at a recent meet in WA’s South West. More than 20 athletes represented Broome Little Athletics when they ventured to Bunbury to compete in the Country Championships last month. During the meet, the young athletes found themselves up against competitors from Derby, Kalgoorlie- Boulder, Geraldton, Albany and Bunbury. Competing in many of the track and field events during the meet, Broome Little Athletics made a strong impact and took home a total of 15 gold medals, 15 silver med-als and 10 bronze medals. Broome Little Athletics’ Helen Ockerby said the highlight of the meet was watching Kayliegh McGaffin close in on the 400m U/9 girls record. “We are awaiting confirmation due to the wind conditions on the day ... but we’re pretty confident she has set a new country record,” she said. The group also was commended on their sportsmanship and encouraging other athletes to push themselves. Several athletes qualified for the 2021 Little Athletics State Track and Field Championships, which are set to take place in Perth in March.
