Broome’s junior netball teams selected for North West Championships at 2023 Junior Development Camp

Broome’s best junior netballers have been selected to represent the Broome Netball Association at the North West Championships this year.

Just over 60 athletes completed phase two of the Junior Development Camp last weekend, fine-tuning their skills under the guidance of industry experts.

The program ran four weeks of squad training before the junior age-division teams were selected.

Camp coordinator Simone Eddington said the program format was in its third year running, proving a success with an increase in players and talent.

“It’s looking really good; we’ve increased our Indigenous athletes by three-fold, the skills have improved and it’s been really positive,” she said.

Despite weather flooding the courts on Friday night, skill training and match play resumed as normal inside the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre.

Elite netball coach Alexis Stephens flew in from Perth for the weekend to provide mentoring and guidance to both athletes and coaches.

“It’s great coming up and seeing talented country athletes - they’re very athletic,” she said.

“We want all the athletes to have the best time and hopefully that’s what I’ll help them achieve.”

The North West Championships will run in Broome this year, from June 16 to 19 at the BRAC.
