A team of young athletes from Broome made history last weekend, travelling 2000km to dominate a WA netball competition which they proudly left as the only team undefeated. Twelve of Broome’s top netballers travelled to Perth for the Netball WA State Cup 2021, which was played from Friday to Sunday last week. Open division coach Simone Eddington accompanied Sophie Moore, Ruby McWilliams, Rebecca Boni, Teagan Butler, Paris Miller, Stevi Evans, Matilda Wadge, Gemma Kent, Tahlia Knox, Imogen John, Lily Triscari and Shilo Munget to Perth for the contest. The girls were up against tough competition, with the best teams from the Great Southern, Success WDNA, Belmont and Swan all showing off their skills. Taking to the courts of the Gold Netball Centre, the girls played six games across the weekend, winning every game and dominating, with score differences of 20 to 30 points each time. Their efforts culminated in the team earning first place overall and receiving the NWA State Cup open trophy. The Netball WA State Cup Competition is held to create a platform for all players, coaches, and umpires from the Aboriginal all stars, metro association teams and regional representative teams to come together and compete. It is also a chance for athletes, umpires and coaches to gain selection points towards progression into next level of programs and paths as a part of the Netball WA Competition Pathway.
