A 27-year-old Broome woman accused of setting two Cable Beach homes on fire in May 2021, leaving the structure and contents of both damaged, has pleaded not guilty. Delphine Birrell appeared in Broome Magistrates Court before Magistrate Anthony Sullivan via video link from Greenough Regional Prison on October 10 and pleaded not guilty to criminal damage by fire. It is alleged Ms Birrell deliberately set fire to two neighbouring homes on Sahanna Place in Cable Beach on May 22 2021 causing damage to the properties and their contents. In the same appearance, Ms Birrell pleaded guilty to three other charges relating to separate incidents, including criminal damage in relation to an incident the day before the fires, in which she damaged a vehicle in Cable Beach. Ms Birrell also pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted aggravated home burglary with intent dating back to March 29, 2021 and to breaching bail on September 1 this year. Ms Birrell was granted bail for $1000 with a surety amount of $1 and will reside in Geraldton with the matter adjourned until January 23.
