Broome Towns give Cable Beach a run for their money in round one

Cable Beach have maintained their dominant position at the top of the league as the West Kimberley Football League kicked off for with first round of the 2024 season at Father McMahon Oval on Saturday, April 13. But the Broome Towns once again gave them a run for their money, with last year’s premiers coming away with the win by just a handful of behinds. Cable Beach were on the back foot in the first half and it looked as if Towns would take home the win and avenge last year’s premiership loss, 5.3 (33) to 3.3 (21). But after the half-time break, Cable Beach came out firing to bring the score back within a point before the final term, 6.3 (39) to 5.8 (38). Sean Gregory and Spencer Brown led the scoring for Towns, each kicking three goals, paving the way forward for the side, while Zihan Angus and Jay Hill led the scoring for Cable Beach with two goals each. In the final quarter, Cable Beach managed to edge in front after bringing their goal tally in line with Towns and sneaking over the line with six behinds, 8.10 (58) to 8.4 (52). Elsewhere in the league, the Looma Eagles and the Broome Saints also had dominant wins over their opponents. The Broome Saints took down the Bidyadanga Emus, powering into the lead after half-time. While the two sides seemed to be evenly matched in the first half, the Saints managed to edge into the lead during the third term and then collect a massive five goals in the last quarter to take home the win, 9.16 (70) to 5.6 (36). Timothy Watson led the scoring for Saints, kicking three goals to help secure the win. The Looma Eagles were behind by a single behind after the first term in their clash against the Peninsula Bombers but quickly jumped into the lead before the half-time break, 4.3 (27) to 3.6 (24). The Eagles carried their momentum into the next half, collecting another seven goals to bring home the win, 11.5 (71) to 8.8 (56). Unfortunately, the Derby Tigers forfeited their match to the Broome Bulls because of a lack of players. The WKFL will return for round two on April 20.
