Broome Shire waste reduction champions revealed at awards

Western Australia’s top waste-reduction and resource-recovery champions have been recognised this month at the 2025 WasteSorted Awards.

The Shire of Broome received the regional award for its waste reduction efforts and Waste Management Facility.

Its spearheading of Broome’s new infrastructure and initiatives, from e-waste drop-offs, to reuse areas and improved recovery practices, was acknowledged as diverting tonnes of waste from landfills.

Shire of Broome manager waste services Myles Mitchell gave thanks to the committed workforce behind the facility.

“The Shire of Broome is proud to be recognised for our commitment to waste reduction and reuse,” he said.

“Working in landfill is not without its challenges, particularly during the wet season, so this recognition is a great reflection of the commitment and dedication shown by our team at the waste management facility driving waste reduction and resource recovery.”

From a competitive pool of 39 finalists, 10 winners were announced across categories spanning business, education, community, government and not-for-profit sectors.

Waste Authority chair Elizabeth Carr praised the event and celebrated Broome Shire’s win and their efforts in creating a greener, less wasteful Broome.

“The WasteSorted Awards shine a light on Western Australians across the State who are driving us towards a low waste and circular future,” she said.

“The Shire of Broome are such deserving winners of this year’s Regional WasteSorted Award. Regional communities have to rise to the challenges of distance in our vast State.

“It is inspiring to see such a transformative program which helps the Broome community better manage its waste and demonstrate what is possible in our regions. My heartiest congratulations.”
