Respected Broome actor Ngaire Pigram has been unveiled as a finalist in one of the nation’s most prestigious television and cinema awards.

The Yawuru woman has been shortlisted for best guest or supporting actress in a television drama at the Australian Film Institute AACTA Awards for her performance in the second series of the Kimberley-set Mystery Road.

Pigram, the daughter of renowned Broome muso Stephen Pigram, appeared as the character Leonie in six episodes of the ABC program, which was filmed in Broome in late 2019.

Speaking to the Broome Advertiser earlier this year, Pigram said she enjoyed taking on a role where she could be “staunch, cheeky and feisty” in a show that explored themes around law v law and Australian Indigenous identity.

She said it meant a lot to see so many locals involved in the production, performance and creative side of the program.

Pigram also appeared in the Bran Nue Dae anniversary musical before it was cut short earlier this year and had a leading role in the short film When Morning Comes.

She is one of eight creatives who have been selected for the RED Screenwest initiative, a collaborative feature that will see Aboriginal women from different parts of WA write and direct their own 10-minute film exploring the theme of missing Indigenous women.

Pigram is nominated in her AACTA category alongside legendary actress Cate Blanchett for her stint in Stateless, fellow Mystery Road star Tasma Walton and Bloome’s Jacki Weaver and Jacqueline McKenzie.

The awards winners will be announced at the end of this month.
