Broome man charged with rape has bail application to reside near school knocked back

A Broome man who allegedly raped and recorded a child under the age of 13-years-old had his bail application to reside within 4km of a school knocked back. Kevin John Williams faced Broome Magistrates Court via video link on July 9, charged with allegedly raping a child, indecently dealing with a child and indecently recording a child, under the age of 13. A bail application was proposed, which would see the man reside at a campground off Fairfield Leopold Downs Road, the location of his arrest. The court heard the proposed location was within 4km of the Wesley Yiramalay Studio School, which hosts students from childhood through to 18 years of age. The proposed accommodation consists of a shed-like structure on a piece of land in a remote area, approximately 70km outside of Fitzroy Crossing. It was heard the police would have no insight into Mr Williams’ actions and he would be “free to do whatever he wants”, if he were to reside there. The lack of police monitoring and close vicinity to the school was enough to see Magistrate Stephen Sharratt refuse to consider the bail application until every charge came in. Mr Williams will reappear in Broome Magistrates Court on July 16.
