A 41-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly starting a fire in Bilingurr following an extensive investigation by local detectives.

Police allege the man set off fireworks in bushland located between Gubinge Road and Kassim Street on August 2019, which ignited the blaze.

The fire spread due to the wind and Department of Fire and Emergency Services attended the scene and extinguished the blaze.

Detectives conducted a search of the man’s property on September 21 and it was alleged they seized two large boxes containing 94 fireworks, including cluster of multiple fireworks.

He has been charged with breach of duty of a person in control of ignition source and unlicensed possession of dangerous goods.

He is due to appear before the Broome Magistrates Court on November 4.
