Broome magistrate sends strong message as young boy denied bail to attend sorry camp

A young relative of the 12-year-old girl killed in a car crash in Fitzroy Crossing last month has been denied bail to attend her sorry camp, with the family deemed among the “biggest offenders in town.” The boy appeared in Broome Children’s Court on August 2, charged with three counts of stealing motor vehicles, aggravated armed robbery, aggravated burglary, aggravated home burglary, possession of stolen property and stealing. An application for bail was made through defence lawyer Ashleigh Williams, so the boy could travel to Fitzroy Crossing to participate in “sorry camp,” to mourn the recent loss of his relative Magistrate Stephen Sharratt was quick to dismiss the bail application due to the seriousness of charges involved. “I’m not all that sympathetic, he is one of the fellas who is acting in the way that led to her death,” he said. “Every time I let him out he commits more crime.” Magistrate Sharratt said the boy’s family were among the biggest offenders in town. “I’ve been forced to do this because these kids are not stopping,” he said. The girl’s death occurred on Sunday, July 25 when a stolen Nissan X-trail carrying seven children aged 16 and under pulled onto a sand track and rolled over. One 12-year-old girl died at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash, while four other youths were rushed to hospital. The boy will appear in Fitzroy Crossing Court on Monday August 9.
