Art Above the 26th parallel to return to Broome Civic Centre with new exhibition next month

Art Above the 26th will return to the Broome Civic Centre next month with a host of new creative works from artists who live and work above the 26th parallel. Set to launch on August 8, the exhibition explores the lifestyles, heritage and character of WA’s North West region through a unique collection of works from local artists. Kimberley Art Network project manager Clancy McDowell said while the latitude line of the 26th parallel officially defines the geographic edge of ‘the north’ it also comes with a certain attitude; a creative and adventurous grit that has its own character and vernacular. She said the exhibition was a great opportunity to see local artists’ works from the Kimberley and Pilbara which are often exhibited in the major cities. “The Kimberley and the rest of the north is bursting with talent, but often we don’t get to see the artworks,” she said. “The region is so huge and artists are so far flung that it’s hard to get everyone together, and there is no regional gallery. So, art above the 26th is a fantastic insight into the visions of our artists who often exhibit in Perth or Melbourne. “We know that locals as well as visitors are keen to discover more of the creative talent of the region and this is a great way to support those artists as well as fostering a deeper understanding of our character and culture.” The exhibition will feature works from artists such as Amelia Jajko, James MacNeil, Naomie Hatherley, Rachel Taylor, Tony Treacy, Gabby Gugeri, Chrissy Carter, Dorothy Forrest, Tommy Ngarrula May, Margaret Albert Margi and many more.
