A large, colourful crowd went to the races in Broome last weekend expecting a top day out and they weren’t disappointed, with multiple Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Jimmy Cassidy bringing this year’s Melbourne Cup to the races for all to see.

From riding and training doubles, outsiders beating favourites, and a sensational Kimberley Cup, it was non-stop entertainment all day.

The Peter Farrell stable got the ball rolling with an opening double at long prices, and a riding double to jockey Angela Johnston.

Then the first leg of a training double to Bruce Kay and his twin brother Phillip celebrating their 70th birthdays.

The fourth race saw consistent Yankee Lima bring up the first leg of a riding double to Zephen Johnston-Porter, who won the fifth with Ortum Krisp, trained by Aaron Pateman.

Then arrived the highlight of the day - the Kimberley Cup; only six runners, but packed with interest. Rogues Point, unbeaten at four starts this season opened in the betting an even-money favourite but drifted alarmingly when money came for last-start winner Sunsphere.

True Attraction, a winner of over $600,000 from prestigious Perth wins, was sent out carrying a hefty 64 kilos.

From the get-go, Rogues Point went to the lead but had no peace in front, and when heads turned for home, it was left to the top weight to come storming home from last, to win convincingly by two and a half lengths.

A training triumph for Pateman. Perhaps only the handicapper can now spoil True Attraction’s chances in the Broome Cup.

And, the day ended with the second winner for birthday trainer Bruce Kay, when Send it Son saluted the judge.

Next week’s highlights are Ladies’ Day on Tuesday and the Cup on Saturday.
