‘Rotten to the core’: Almost 20 per cent of charges laid against WA bikies involve domestic violence

WA bikies were hit with more than 1300 charges in the past financial year — with almost 20 per cent of them involving serious violent offending against an intimate partner by thugs police say are “rotten to the core”. An exclusive analysis obtained by The West Australian of the crimes committed by outlaw motorcycle members in the 12 months to July revealed 245 offences involved serious violence against female partners. Alarmingly, that amounts to almost a fifth of the 1350 charges laid against patched members. State Crime Commander Gordon Fairman said bikie gangs were known for their involvement in extortion, weapons, drug trafficking, money laundering and violent crime. But he said the high level of sexual and family violence committed by gang members against their partners was often not as well-recognised and was of most concern. “I think more generally, the most concerning of any of the offences that we are seeing is the extraordinarily high rate of serious family violence perpetrated by gang members,” he said. “Twenty per cent of all of the prosecuted offences against gang members for the year involved violent offending against an intimate partner. “I’m really pleased with the approach from the gang crime squad in that space, but I’m troubled by the numbers.” However, Cdr Fairman said it should “come as no surprise that the gangs themselves often boast about the way that they treat women”. “They are sexualised, objectified, often subjected to acts of degradation and violence. It should come as no surprise that those gangs are themselves rotten to the core concerning the way they treat women,” he said. Some of the crimes investigated by police last year include a horrifying alleged attack at the hands of a 37-year-old former member of the Bandidos. He is accused of squeezing his ex-partner’s head until she suffered a black eye. Since then, she has also allegedly received several threats to her life. In another horrific act of domestic violence, a Mongols bikie and his partner became embroiled in an argument while driving a car in September, before the man punched his partner several times. The car then crashed into a pole. Several members of the public witnessed the man continue his attack after the crash before the alleged perpetrator fled the scene. The 36-year-old man was charged with serious charges, including aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm. Police Minister Paul Papalia said bikies were “by definition, cowards”. “It’s not surprising that they regularly bully partners and wives,” he said. In other violent crimes investigated by police in the past year, which do not involve family violence, include an attack on a 32-year-old man who presented to Armadale Hospital with life-threatening injuries on June 9 last year. They included head injuries and fractures to his leg. The Rebels are suspected of being responsible. However, the investigation of the attack met a roadblock when the victim declined to speak to the police. The following month, on July 16, gang crime detectives were called to investigate another terrifying incident in Australind. Four men — understood to be linked to the Bandidos gang — were wearing hoods and armed with a sledgehammer and baseball bats when they smashed the victim’s door, bedroom window, lounge window and all of the glass on the victim’s car. Again, the case was not proceeded with because the victim feared for their safety. “This comes back to what is often referred to as a culture of silence or secrecy within the gangs,” Cdr Fairman said. “In my mind, it simply comes back to intimidation, threats and fear.” Cdr Fairman said the feelings of fear and intimidation could be even worse in the context of a domestic relationship. A Mongol was charged in November after he and another man allegedly posed as police officers executing a search warrant at a house in Como. When inside, the pair attacked a 34-year-old woman and her 75-year-old father, with the woman over the head with an axe and suffering a skull fracture. In June this year, police were called to a home in Withers where they found his ex-partner’s ex-partner had seriously assaulted a 34-year-old man. A 30-year-old Mongrel Mob member was charged. And in December, Dayne Brajkovich was stabbed in the neck at Kings Park. Various search warrants were executed, which turned up drugs, firearms and ammunition — but nobody has been charged over the wounding. Cdr Fairman said the investigation was ongoing. He said the perception bikie gangs try to portray that the lifestyle is glamorous — including increasingly through slick, professional videos on social media — was wrong. He said police intelligence revealed more than 20 per cent of known bikies do not own a motorcycle, do not have a bike licence — and do not even know how to ride a motorcycle. Last financial year, police made 187 arrests involving bikies. There are approximately 700 known OMCG members in WA — 14 per cent of whom are currently behind bars. “We make no apologies for that, and we will continue to ensure that gang members are brought before the courts and held to account for their offending,” Cdr Fairman said. 1800 RESPECT
