Former NFL punter Arryn Siposs has opened up on the brutal nature of his axing by the Philadelphia Eagles in “one of the shortest meetings” he’s ever had.

Newly installed as a development coach at Hawthorn in a return to his AFL roots, Siposs says AFL list management pales in comparison to the cutthroat nature of American sport as he revealed the meeting which ended his NFL dream.

Siposs, who was a punter for three years with the Philadelphia Eagles and played in their three-point Super Bowl defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs in February, said discovering he had been cut from the Eagles roster came in a “businesslike” meeting which led to his Melbourne return.

A poor punt from the former St Kilda forward during the second half of the match left the Eagles wide open as the Chiefs completed a 65-yard punt return, the longest ever in a Super Bowl.

Siposs, 31, did not play another match, after he was waived in August and re-signed to the practice squad before he was released in September.

After being delisted by St Kilda in 2015, Siposs told SEN Breakfast the differences between his AFL and NFL exit meetings were stark.

“From the AFL point of view, they try and work something out for you at a later stage, or you have a chat about things that you can work on and why (they) made the decision and that,” he said.

“Whereas I go into the door for the GM over at the Eagles and it’s just basically ‘all the best, we’re going to move with somebody else and good luck’.

“Probably one of the shortest meetings I’ve had in my entire life. And then the cleaning out of the locker process afterwards – obviously never fun.

“It’s very, very short and sharp and very much businesslike.”

Siposs joined Hawthorn’s staff last month, where he will work under head of development and three-time premiership Hawk Andy Collins.

The Hawks announced on Wednesday they would be sending defender Changkuoth Jiath to Qatar for a medical assessment after the Christmas break.

Jiath only played eight games during the 2023 season as he battled calf and achilles injuries.

It is understood the 24-year-old is close to full fitness, but the Hawks want the assessment to help prevent any recurrence of the injuries.

The Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital in Doha which Jiath will visit in January is also where Richmond sent defender Josh Gibcus last month after the 20-year-old sat out the entire season with a serious hamstring injury.
