Thai Jordan Luu: Denmark meth dealer avoids extra time on jail sentence, fined for other drug offences

A Denmark man who was recently jailed for meth dealing has avoided additional time on his sentence after appearing in court on a host of drug-related charges. Thai Jordan Luu, 46, appeared before Albany Magistrates Court on November 25 via video link from Albany Regional Prison for sentencing on eight drug and weapons charges including possessing stolen or unlawfully obtained property, prohibited drugs and paraphernalia, and prohibited weapons. All charges related to February 26 as a result of searches of Luu’s belongings and property by police, when he was stopped in Mt Barker and later arrested. Police prosecutor Sgt Warrick Walker told the court Luu was arrested and searched in Mt Barker on February 26, when he was found to be carrying a large amount of methamphetamine and $2000 in cash, which police suspected had been obtained from drug sales. A further search warrant executed at his Denmark home unearthed more illicit drugs, including cannabis, multiple pieces of drug paraphernalia like glass smoking implements, as well as a gel blaster and a pair of knuckle dusters. Defence counsel Bruno Illari said Luu’s drug habits had taken a turn for the worse in 2023 when he began a turbulent relationship with a drug user, and the impact of his own use of illicit substances had spiralled out of his control. Luu was sentenced in the Albany District Court to four years and 10 months behind bars for possessing a trafficable quantity of methamphetamine with the intention to sell or supply it to another, with the drug found in the same search undertaken by police in Mt Barker on February 26. Mr Illari asked the magistrate to consider the totality of Luu’s sentence, given all the charges related to the same date and series of actions he had just been sentenced for in the District Court. Magistrate Matthew Holgate ordered the forfeiture of the cash and weapons, and the destruction of the cannabis, methamphetamine and paraphernalia. Mr Holgate conceded the possession of the $2000 cash could reasonably be considered “part and parcel” of the more serious offence Luu had been sentenced for in the District Court, and did not give him additional jail time. Luu was handed a $2000 global fine for all eight charges.
