Spencer Park have scraped into the Lower Great Southern Hockey Association women’s A-grade preliminary final after holding North Albany to a scoreless draw in a tense final round on Saturday.

Park entered the match knowing they needed at least a draw to keep their finals hopes alive, while also relying on Mt Barker failing to win against Manypeaks.

With their season on the line, Park came out firing against Redbacks in a fiercely contested match.

Park suffered an early setback when Evie Famlonga broke her finger just minutes into the opening quarter.

Despite the blow, Park continued to fight throughout the match, with their defence standing firm against Redbacks, who had already secured the minor premiership.

Both sides created opportunities throughout the contest but neither could find a way through their opponents’ defence.

The intensity continued after half-time, with possession moving from end to end as both teams pushed for a breakthrough.

But after four quarters of tight and determined hockey, neither side could find the back of the net.

Beck Gallimore, Cate McDonald and Fenella O’Neill were instrumental for Redbacks, while Rani Flynn, Madeline Roberts and Annalise Judd were contributors for Park.

Meanwhile, Mt Barker also faced a must-win situation against Manypeaks but their finals hopes were dashed after they played out a 1-1 draw.

Kathryn Slattery scored for Manypeaks, while Sarayah Post found the net for Mt Barker.

Peaks’ best contributors were Slattery, Katelin Woithe and Virginia Mayne, while Renae Parsons, Olivia Riggall and Post were key for Mt Barker.

Redbacks’ minor premiership has secured them a direct place in the grand final, where they will await the winners of the preliminary final.

Spencer Park will now face Manypeaks at 2.15pm on Saturday, with a place in the grand final on the line.

In the men’s A-grade competition, Manypeaks secured the minor premiership and progressed directly to the grand final.

North Albany defeated Lower Great Southern Hockey Association 3-0 on September 3, while Spencer Park claimed a 3-1 win over Manypeaks on Friday.

Darren Parkes led the scoring for Park with two goals, and Angus Latham added another.

Samuel Graham scored Peaks’ only goal.

David Wareham, Mitchell Pike and Parkes were strong for Park, while Oliver Douglas, Ryan Johnson and Jesse Carman were key for Peaks.

Spencer Park will face North Albany in Saturday’s preliminary final at 4pm, with the winner earning the right to take on Manypeaks in the grand final.
