IN PICTURES: Enthusiastic long weekend crowd gets around annual Albany Show and Shine despite dreary weather

The Great Southern Street Machines Association held its 29th annual Show and Shine on Sunday, with car owners and clubs bringing vehicles of all models and eras down to Centennial Park to display. The annual car bonanza comprises events over three days over the September long weekend, culminating in Sunday’s car show. Held in conjunction with Triple M Radio at the Albany Agricultural Society’s Centennial Pavilion, the event drew a crowd of hundreds across the day. Despite continued rain and cold weather doing its best to put a dampener on the long weekend fun, families, community members and car enthusiasts alike turned out to get a look at the array of proudly displayed street cars and talk shop with their owners. Awards were also up for grabs, with four judges choosing the top cars and motorcycles on display, as well as a top-10 best of the show. Mick Jury’s HG Holden ute was awarded best of show and Stephen Adams’ HQ Holden won the people’s choice award. Attendees lodged their ballots throughout the day. Terry Moody took home best in show for motorcycles with his Suzuki TS 185 and Grant Hill’s Triumph won the people’s choice motorcycle. The top 10 cars on display comprised a variety of makes and models, including Don Brooks’ 1932 pick-up, Craig McDonald’s Torana and Barry Webster’s GTS Monaro. Albany Speedway Club’s display of racecars, on show ahead of the start of the season in November, won top display of the day. Paul Monkhouse’s Chrysler Charger was the most-travelled vehicle on display, with the odometer clocking 405, 000km.
