Donald Sydney John Woods and Kayla Jean Woods: Pair fined more than $12k after dog attacks woman in McKail

Two McKail residents have been handed more than $12,000 in fines and an order to euthanise their mastiff dog after it escaped and attacked a woman in her 60s earlier this year. The 64-year-old woman was walking along the footpath of Drome Road in McKail on the morning of March 30 when a large brindle-coloured mastiff, accompanied by a small terrier, came out of a home and attacked her. The mastiff only ceased its attack when a passing motorist blared their horn to scare it off. She was left with puncture wounds, bruising and abrasions to her left bicep and forearm. The dog’s owners Donald Sydney John Woods, 60, and Kayla Jean Woods, 37, were convicted of dog attack causing physical injury and not holding or tethering a dog in Albany Magistrates Court on Wednesday. Prosecutor Carl Fjastad said the pair — who failed to appear in court — did not show any remorse when told of the attack. He also said that while it was Mr Woods’ first offence, the 60-year-old had a “very long history” with the City of Albany and believes they are “always picking on his dogs”. Magistrate Erin O’Donnell said the victim, who now carries a personal alarm and a walking stick on her walks, has been impacted by the “frightening” incident and that the Woods appeared to be “belligerent” towards City officers that attended for the dog. She handed Mr Woods, the registered owner, a global fine of $6500 plus costs of $1309.50 and court costs of $189. Ms Woods received a global fine of $4500. Ms O’Donnell ordered the dog be destroyed.
