Chester Pass Road crash: 17-year-old boy being treated for non-life-threatening injuries after car rollover

A teenage driver is lucky to be alive after rolling his car on Chester Pass Road on Friday, with police warning the crash could have been fatal. The 17-year-old driver was taken to Perth for treatment after emergency services worked to free him from his flipped car. Police said he was driving his SsangYong sedan in a northerly direction on Chester Pass Road when he veered off the left side of the road and rolled, before coming to rest in a ditch against some trees on Willyung Road. Emergency services were called to the scene about 3.30pm, with four firefighter crews using hydraulic and manual rescue tools to rescue the teenager from his car where he was trapped. He was the only occupant of the vehicle and was freed by 5pm, and the scene made safe. He was taken to Albany Health Campus to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The Advertiser understands he was then taken to Royal Perth Hospital where he remains in a stable condition. Great Southern traffic officer-in-charge Derek Grimes implored drivers to take precautions when driving. “The Great Southern is having more than its fair share of serious and fatal crashes,” he said. “We’ve attended many in recent times where there is injuries and not fatalities but there is not much difference between a crash that has no injuries or one that is fatal. “It could be due to a slightly different angle, a bit more speed or a different road surface, that changes the outcome. “We are urging people to drive responsibly on the road, everyone, especially with the current and upcoming weather.” The police investigation into the incident is continuing.
