Albany Cycle Club’s second Elleker time trial is won by Colin Rose ahead of Gardiner, Bascombe and Russell

Colin Rose won the second round of Albany Cycle Club’s Elleker triple header, an individual time trial held in ideal conditions on Saturday morning.
Rose blitzed the field, stopping the clock at 25min. 32sec. and averaging a very rapid 43.5km/h to hold off the trio of Mike Gardiner, Vince Bascombe and Tom Russell.
Setting off at one-minute intervals, riders sought to try and match times from last week’s team effort, no mean feat given the collective is usually greater than the individual.
Steve Maguire was the first rider to better 30km/h, completing the 18.5km course in under 35min.
Dave Marshall dropped the time a bit further, bettering 32km/h for the distance.
Jacob Greenwood, the fastest junior, couldn’t match last weeks’ time, but did improve on his time and speed from last year.
Liz Cooper, the fastest woman, impressed with an average speed of 33.2km/h.
It seems that the Denmark riders have a penchant for vintage steel.
Last time out, David Beckwith rode a beautifully restored Raleigh from England, while this time it was an iconic Australian-made Ken Evans that sauntered around the course.
At the pointy end of the field, however, high-tech carbon ruled the roost.
Mike Staude, one of four riders to record average speeds in excess of 35km/h, took third place in the individual competition.
In the overall placings, it was Denmark rider Martin Depiazzi who improved his time from last week to take third in a time of 27.39 (41.1km/h).
As fast as he was, he still conceded a chunk of time to the second-place trio of Gardiner, Bascombe and Russell who averaged 42.8km/h.
They however, collectively, were no match for Rose who also went faster than last year.
Racing resumes on January 17 at Elleker for the third event in the series.
