David McAllister’s homecoming to WA Ballet in 2024 as guest artistic director

Perth-born David McAllister had no plan to work again when he left his four-decade-long legacy at The Australian Ballet in 2020, so regards everything he has done since as a bit of a bonus. His decision to step down followed a 20-year tenure as the Melbourne-based company’s artistic director, after joining The Australian Ballet in 1983 as a dancer and rising to the role of principal artist by 1989, performing roles he only ever dreamt of dancing during his days studying at The Australian Ballet School. McAllister would go on to release his beautifully candid memoir, Soar: A Life Freed by Dance, in 2020, while taking on freelance staging and choreographing ballets, including a new production of Swan Lake for Finnish National Ballet in 2021. There was also the release of behind-the-scenes book Ballet Confidential, a personal and in-depth look into the gritty and transformative world of ballet, along with a brief return to the stage during 2023 in The Australian Ballet’s 60th anniversary program, where he performed alongside 11 other former dancers from the company in contemporary work Paragon by resident choreographer Alice Topp. He juggled Paragon with responsibilities at Royal New Zealand Ballet, which sought out McAllister’s experience at the start of the year in a guest artistic director caretaker role while hunting for a more permanent replacement, finding it by November with Ty King-Wall. In a highly anticipated homecoming, McAllister will hold a similar guest artistic director role at WA Ballet in 2024 while the company searches to replace departing artistic director Aurelien Scannella following his 10 years at the helm. “It’s a huge honour after the genesis of my career happened in Perth,” McAllister shared. “While I did leave at 17 and went to The Australian Ballet School, I always felt incredibly connected, and I came back and danced with WA Ballet a couple of times. It feels like it’s sort of closing the circle. “This is a great opportunity to really reconnect with my roots, my artistic roots, my creative roots . . . I’m really looking forward to being back in that environment that sort of shaped me.” He recounted fondly doing Sunday boys’ ballet classes with WA Ballet at a converted hall in Fremantle, in the days before the company moved to His Majesty’s Theatre and long before its current home in Maylands. Growing up in Woodlands, McAllister was one of five children, and while his mum Olive has since sadly passed away, he was looking forward to being reunited with his siblings, along with his 90-year-old dad Don, while in Perth, where he is excited by the prospect of buying a Mini Cooper to get around the city. It has meant packing up his Melbourne apartment and continuing his long-distance relationship with supportive partner of 15 years, playwright and director Wesley Enoch, who is working at Queensland University of Technology and on the board of Creative Australia. “He has one of those fantastic portfolio careers where he’s always travelling, so he’s just going to add Perth into his cycle,” McAllister said. “When I told him WA Ballet had approached me, he just said we had made New Zealand work and it was the same amount of travel.” Contracted for the year, McAllister said his aim is to provide WA Ballet with stability, helping with the search for an artistic director while delivering the company’s 2024 season, largely planned by Scannella. It is a program that begins with Metamorphosis: Ballet at The Quarry in February, before seasons of La Bayadere (The Temple Dancer), State: Contemporary Vision, Genesis, Romeo & Juliet and The Sleeping Beauty. “I mean, in a perfect world, of course I’d love to do the job myself, but at 60, if you’re looking down the barrel of having someone there for five to 10 years, it’s not going to be me,” McAllister explained, ahead of his official start at WA Ballet on January 3. “I feel I’m also at that point in my career, where I get this lovely opportunity to impart the knowledge I have, but also to be able to nurture the next generation of directors and that’s something that I’m very passionate about. “Part of the reason that I loved my time in New Zealand was all about that, and I feel like that’s a bit of my brief here in Perth too, is to look after the company in this interim period, but also to help the company find the new director and really nurture them into the future. I’m just really going to keep everything ticking over until the transition is done, I guess, for however long that is. “I am just going to be loving myself sick (in) Perth.
