A contestant on the US reboot of Wipeout has died after finishing the popular game show’s obstacle course.

On-set emergency staff came to the man’s aid when it became clear he required medical attention after he completed the challenge on the show’s set in Santa Clarita, California.

They stayed with him until paramedics arrived and he was taken to hospital, where the man, aged in his 30s’ was declared dead.

His cause of death is being withheld until his family can be notified. Production on the program has been halted.

“We are devastated to have learned of his passing, and our deepest sympathy goes out to the family,” a spokesperson for American TV network TBS said.

The show’s production company, Endemol Shine North America, added: "We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and our thoughts are with them at this time.”

All Wipeout contestants reportedly undergo medical examinations, clearing them to take part in the program, which often features spectacular challenges and big tumbles.

The show is also supported by a safety team including paramedics, two set medics, a paramedic coordinator and a safety producer.

The series premiered in 2008 and is being rebooted with wrestler John Cena, comedian Nicole Byer and model Camille Kostek co-hosting.
