Perth audiences have their opportunity to be part of history as the 40th anniversary Australian tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical CATS opens at Crown Theatre Perth.

Based on T.S Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats, the production features a series of feline character vignettes, introducing each character in the Jellicle cat tribe on the night of the Jellicle Ball.

“I still get the chills every time I’m in the audience as soon as that overture begins,” director and choreographer Amy Berrisford said.

“This show is so iconic, and to be a part of it, you’re a part of history. We’re really stewards of this show.

“I’ve loved watching this cast create their version of these roles. It’s an honour to help these performers tell the story the best way possible. This cast is incredible, and it’s full of triple threats . . . it’s not easy being a cat.”

Berrisford said the show’s magic stemmed from the combined genius of the original creative team comprising Webber, Eliot, choreographer Gillian Lynne and director Trevor Nunn.

“You really see it come together in this show and its timeless hits, unforgettable choreography and themes that still relate to today and are presented in the most entertaining way,” she said.

CATS opened at Theatre Royal Sydney in June, where the musical originally premiered in Australia 40 years ago, and Berrisford is excited to be sharing this show about family, tribe and togetherness with Perth audiences.

“Watching all these generations that come to the theatre, you see kids and mums and dads and grandparents, and that’s what this 40th anniversary show is about,” she said.

“It brings everyone together. There’s so much history and love there, so I think that’s why this show is so successful. I really can’t wait for Perth audiences to enjoy all the cats in the junkyard.”

CATS is at Crown Theatre Perth, November 8 to December 6. Tickets at ticketmaster.com.au.
