Skippers Aviation investigated by ATSB after Northern Star Resources and IGO route incidents within three days

One of the State’s top fly-in, fly-out airlines is refurbishing its ageing fleet amid probes by the aviation safety regulator over two “serious” incidents in WA within the space of just three days. IGO and Northern Star Resources are sticking by Skippers Aviation, according to recent flight data, despite their workers being onboard at the time of the incidents. Perth-based Skippers says any issues have been fixed and it has taken “proactive” steps to improve the “overall reliability and performance” of the 20 aircraft under its banner. On August 12, a propeller-driven Fairchild Industries plane flown by Skippers was travelling from IGO’s Forrestania nickel operation in the western Goldfields when its brakes failed after touching down at Perth Airport. “During approach, the crew received a hydraulic system warning,” the Australian Transport Safety Bureau stated. “During taxi, the brakes failed, and the aircraft collided with a hangar resulting in minor damage.” Three days later, a similar turboprop Fairchild plane in the Skippers fleet malfunctioned during flight. The plane had just departed Perth Airport on the way to Northern Star’s Bronzewing gold mine near Leinster when it had to turn back. “During climb after take-off, hot air and smoke were observed emanating from the cockpit ventilation system and the crew elected to return to Perth. During the return, the aircraft descended below the minimum safe altitude,” the ATSB stated. The ATSB classified both incidents as “serious” and expects both investigations to be completed by the end of March next year. It is unclear how many workers were onboard the planes at the time of the incidents, but both have a capacity of about 20 passengers. A Skippers spokesman said the company takes the safety of its operations “with the utmost seriousness” and “fully support(s)“ the ATSB’s investigations. “While the two incidents occurred within a few days of each other, they are unrelated and have been addressed separately,” he told The West Australian. “The defects leading to both the smoke in the cockpit and the hydraulic system issue have been rectified, and the affected aircraft have since been returned to service after undergoing thorough inspections and necessary defect rectification. “It is also important to note that we are currently investing in a fleet refurbishment program aimed at improving the overall reliability and performance of our aircrafts.” Skippers had 27 planes in its fleet during 2022, but has since slimmed down to 20. Flight data shows the plane that hit the hanger first took to the skies 30 years ago and over the past week has been flying to both Forrestania and Bronzewing, as well as a Roy Hill site. The other aircraft — commissioned 28 years ago — has flown to Bronzewing and gold mines run by Ramelius Resources and Genesis Minerals. About a week after the Forrestania incident a Skippers flight attendant was convicted for vaping on the same Perth to Forrestania route. Skippers predominately flies to the Goldfields and counts Rio Tinto, Lynas Rare Earths, Regis Resources, AngloGold Ashanti and Gold Fields among its other customers. The airline is owned by the wealthy Quinlivan family and led by Stan Quinlivan. Mr Quinlivan’s extensive investment portfolio includes the Ocean Beach Hotel and a troop of race horses. IGO and Northern Star declined to comment. Mining was halted at IGO’s Forrestania in September and the operation is currently being transitioned into care and maintenance. Medallion Metals plans to use some of the processing infrastructure at Forrestania. Northern Star bought the Bronzewing mine in 2019. The Bronzewing deposit was discovered by famed prospector Mark Creasy in the 1990s.
