West Coast Fever have lost a thrilling Super Netball grand final, with Melbourne Vixens claiming a two-goal victory at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena.

In one of the games of the year, it took until the final minute of the match for the ladder-leaders to seal the 66-64 victory and break Fever’s hearts.

Vixens’ import Mwai Kumwenda was named player of the match, scoring 47 goals in a monumental effort against Australia’s best goalkeeper Courtney Bruce.

The first term was a classic shoot-out, with neither team making any costly errors and they both made sure they did not waste opportunities under the post.

Fever goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler was a dominant force with 56 goals at 98 per cent accuracy, with her connection with Verity Charles putting plenty of pressure on the Vixens’ defence early.

Fever’s one-goal quarter-time lead was quickly lost as Vixens’ opened the second term full of energy and goalkeeper Emily Mannix intercepted any half chances presented to her by errant passes.

As Kumwenda began to get on top of Bruce with eight goals early in the quarter, Fever coach Stacey Marinkovich made the first change of the decider, bringing on semifinal hero Sunday Aryang to add some defensive flair.

This changed the dynamic of the game and Fever all of a sudden went on a run before half-time, scoring the final five goals, including a Fowler super shot after the siren to lead 33-32.

Errant passes and some general play turnovers from Fever saw the Vixens regain the lead and even after a midcourt shuffle, Melbourne looked more composed than West Coast and at one stage had a game-high five-goal lead.

Kumwenda was demanding the ball in the goal circle and stopping Bruce from impacting out of defence, while Mannix and Jo Weston forced Fever to throw risky passes to Fowler.

Yet Fever still fought back late again, but in a tight grand final, Vixens’ three-goal lead seemed a mountain to climb.

But just when Fever needed something big, up stepped Bruce, who produced an incredible intercept, which turned the game on its head once again and saw Fever draw level.

Bruce again had a say when a Kumwenda miss saw her draw a contact foul, which Fever scored from and they all of a sudden led again.

Vixens though held their nerve a little better in the final moments, with a massive tip from Mannix to Weston off a missed Alice Teague-Neeld shot the biggest moment of the game.

From here they held the ball for the final minute of the game, ensuring they walked away with the 2020 premiership.
