West Coast will wait several more days before testing Josh Kennedy’s injured ankle with the club determined to give him as much time as possible to prepare for Saturday’s elimination final against Collingwood.

Kennedy injured his ankle against North Melbourne in the last round of the season and, while coach Adam Simpson has been confident that it wouldn’t keep him sidelined from the elimination final, the Coleman medallist still hasn’t trained.

Simpson said the coaches didn’t want to take any risks with the extended time between games.

“We haven’t seen him train this week,” Simpson told ABC Radio.

“This morning he might have run a few laps and had a couple of shots at goal. It’s not his kicking foot. It’s his left ankle so he is able to have set shots.

“We just don’t want to test it too early just in case it flares up a little bit. He did a couple of little things. I reckon as all players do, they test it on their own when no-one is looking.

“He’s in a good mood which is always a good sign.”

West Coast are set to have an influx of talent for the elimination final with a host of stars having recovered from injury. That group includes tagger Mark Hutchings and the Eagles are weighing up whether to lock down on Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury.

The Magpies’ games record holder didn’t play in the teams’ most recent clash after injuring his quad in the warm up and West Coast won that match by 66 points.

Pendlebury’s influence has been telling since his return and no Magpie has had more score involvements in the last four matches.

With Steele Sidebottom unavailable after returning to Victoria to be at his daughter’s birth, Simpson said Pendlebury was an obvious target for a tagger.

“In the last month the boys were telling me the other day that he’s been involved in 49 per cent of their scores. So, if you’re going to go to anyone, you’re probably going to go to Pendles,” Simpson said.

“That’s not a secret. Everyone knows how good he is. It’s just what you’re willing to give up. If you’re going to tag someone, are you willing to give up a midfield spot for someone that might have a different focus.

“We are working through that. Nothing has been decided. Adams has had a tremendous year as well. With these types of teams, I feel like it’s the collective that gets you but they have definitely got some individuals who are top notch players.”

Meanwhile, star defender Jeremy McGovern is on the verge of making a stunning return having missed just one game with a hamstring injury.

The Eagles feared McGovern’s season could have been over after he was injured against St Kilda 17 days ago.

Simpson revealed the four-time All-Australian had already passed the relevant strength tests and said he was “pretty confident” his defensive rock would take his place against the Magpies.

“He has pretty much ticked off all the protocols to return to play,” Simpson said.

“But he’s got to get through a week of training. For anyone who’s done a hamstring there’s that period where you’re running around thinking about it and then all of a sudden you stop thinking about it and you get on with just playing.

“And he’s probably got to get through that mental barrier this week which every player goes through.

“So the fact is he gets a full week of training and we’ll be able to make a really clear decision by the end of the week. But I do think he’s more likely than unlikely.”
