VideoAFLW: The Eagles have registered their first win of the season, and it came at the expense of the Suns.

West Coast winger Kate Orme jumped for joy after kicking the opening goal in Sunday’s win over Gold Coast and there was a special reason why.

The 31-year-old played an instrumental part in the Eagles’ one-point win over Gold Coast at Mineral Resources Park on Sunday with 11 disposals after coming in as a late inclusion for injured midfielder Aisling McCarthy.

But it’ll be her goal in the opening term of the contest which will likely stay in her mind forever, because it was the first one she’s ever kicked in a game.

Having spent much of her short career in the midfield and at half-back at both the Eagles and WAFL club Claremont, Orme had never got much of an opportunity until the weekend, when she ended up on the end of a great pass from Hayley Bullas, putting her just 20m out in front of goal, which she slotted.

It was a moment she said was “indescribable” as her teammates mobbed her with joy.

“It wasn’t just my first goal in AFLW footy, it was my first ever goal in football,” Orme told the club’s website.

“I cut my teeth on the half-back line and a bit on the wing so you don’t often find yourself in that kind of circumstance, but I’m really pleased that I was able to go back and kick it.

“I’d never held the football that long in a match before.

“We do a lot of work on mindfulness with (WA women’s football legend) Jan Cooper and I probably took as much time as I possibly could to go back and take a couple of deep breaths. I kicked it from a pretty fortunate spot on the ground.

“I was so concentrated on the kick that I think my celebration was a bit delayed, but I mean it was a special moment, a wonderful moment for my family. My Mum would’ve been watching on TV and my Dad was in the stands.”

Orme said playing a Western Derby at Optus Stadium against West Coast this Sunday was a great opportunity for the game in the state.

“It’s pretty special and we cannot wait for the challenge,” she said.

“Derby mode is a big mode, but we’re actually really fortunate that we probably know the Fremantle side quite well.

“We play them in a pre-season match each year, a lot of girls would’ve played state league with them. They’re obviously a formidable football team and we’ve got our work cut out for us.”
