Carlton players got the trimmers out on Friday in a touching show of support for teammate Sam Docherty as the Blues co-captain battles cancer for the second time.

Blues trio Jack Silvagni, Zac Fisher and Jacob Weitering had their heads shaved at Ikon Park, while co-captain Patrick Cripps also posted a video and photo of himself doing the same from home.

As part of the ‘Doing it for Doc’ campaign, over $120,000 has so far been raised in donations for the Peter Mac Foundation to support their discovery of cancer cures.

“It’s obviously a big occasion and in support of Sam Docherty, our captain and our teammate,” Weitering said.

“It’s terrific to see that so many of the boys shaved their heads today.

“I thank everyone who’s donated so far, but again it does come back to supporting Doc and I hope he’s proud of us because we’re very proud of him.”

Docherty this week revealed he was “feeling great” and had “powered” through the first half of chemotherapy treatment following a recurrence of testicular cancer in August.

In a heartwarming post on social media on Tuesday night, the popular Blues defender said he had been overwhelmed by the support he had received since his diagnosis.

The appeal originally hoped to raise $50,000, but the $100,000 barrier was broken through by Friday afternoon.

“I’m not surprised because of the type of person Doc is,” Weitering said.

“He’s very well loved among us boys and the club … we’re right behind him and if there’s anyone that can get through this it’s Doc.”

Weitering admitted he liked his new look and said he could stick with it.

“I don’t mind it,” he said.

“I’ve been giving a few compliments and I look a little bit meaner apparently.”

DOCHERTY’S INSPIRING MESSAGE AMID CANCER TREATMENT

Carlton co-captain Sam Docherty has revealed he is “feeling great” and has “powered” through the first half of chemotherapy treatment following a recurrence of testicular cancer in August.

In a heartwarming post on social media on Tuesday night, the popular Blues defender said he had been overwhelmed by the support he had received since his diagnosis.

Docherty said he had been left “speechless” by a campaign from Blues teammates, set up by fellow captain Patrick Cripps, to shave their heads on Friday in support of the Peter Mac Foundation.

Donations can be made at the foundation’s website, foundation.petermac.org.

“Over the last few months I have been overwhelmed with the support I have received from so many,” Docherty posted.

“For those asking how I am going — I am feeling great! Although there are some tough periods, I am managing really well and have powered through the first half of my treatment.

“Not long left now of this chapter.”

Docherty said he couldn’t be more grateful for the widespread support he has received, including his teammates who agreed to shave their heads as part of a fundraising campaign for the Peter Mac Foundation.

“What started as some mates wanting to show some support has turned into something I could never have imagined and I am speechless by the support of the wider community and in particular @patrickcripps, @lillosullivan and @carlton_fc,” Docherty posted.

“I can’t believe the amount of support and generosity we are receiving from the @petermaccancercentre. I have experienced first hand the amazing work that the nurses and doctors do every single day and I am proud to be able to help raise money and awareness for an incredible foundation.

“The money raised will have a significant impact on so many fights against all types of cancer.”

Cripps urged Blues and footy fans to dig deep, explaining: “One of our own, Sam Docherty, is currently fighting a battle and as a club and broader community, we are wanting to show our support for him and the Peter Mac Foundation.”

“On Friday 8 October, please join a number of players as we shave our heads in support for Sam.

“We also want to raise funds for the Peter Mac Foundation to support their discovery of cancer cures. We are hoping to raise $5,000.

“Thank you in advance for your generosity, and we can’t wait to see a few shaved heads getting around in support.”

Docherty has been undergoing a 12-week chemotherapy treatment, with the club hoping he can make a full recovery.
