Three-time Geelong premiership winner Joel Corey is Fremantle’s new development coach, joining ex-Bulldog Matthew Boyd at the Dockers for 2021.

Corey, who was recruited from East Perth with pick 8 in the 1999 Draft, said he was excited to return home after two decades in Victoria.

“As a family, we’re really excited about the adventure of moving west,” Corey said.

“Personally, joining Fremantle will give me the opportunity to meet a whole new group of staff and players and I’m looking forward to building some good relationships.”

Corey played more than 270 games at the Cats, including the 2007, 2009 and 2011 premierships, before retiring in 2013.

The midfielder finished as a two-time All Australian and a two-time Cats best and fairest.

He went on to join the Western Bulldogs as a development coach before taking over as stoppages and set plays coach for the 2016 premiership season.

Longmuir said Corey’s decision to return home to WA was exciting for the Dockers.

“Joel’s skillset is exactly what we need in terms of developing our young players, especially our midfielders as he’s had extensive experience in that area,” Longmuir said.

“He was an outstanding player in his playing days, who was not only talented but a very smart footballer. He’s someone who continuously worked on his game to get better and these are traits that we want to instil in all of our players.”

Corey’s signature comes just a week after Matthew Boyd signed as an assistant coach to focus on defence.

“Both (Joel) and Matthew will bring new ideas and bring a new set of eyes on our program, and that’s something that we’re looking forward to benefiting from,” Longmuir said.

Corey and Boyd will replace Michael Prior and Anthony Rock, who were sacked during the 2020 season.
