After two years of operation, the Kununurra Scout Group is at risk of being shut down if it does not find more volunteers.

Run almost solely by mother of four Sam Hatchman, the club could fold in 2021 if volunteers don’t step into roles of scout leaders and committee members.

“Basically I’m doing it on my own at the moment,” she said.

“The leaders I have with me have been with me from the start and we haven’t had anyone new join us and help out on a long-term basis, so it’s not feasible for us to continue like this.

“I really need help in (the) secretary and treasurer role on the committee and just leader volunteers to help us fundraise, lead the kids in activities and be part of our team.

“It’s at a point that if we don’t get any help, I’ll be forced to close down at Christmas time which isn’t ideal for us or the kids.”

The Kununurra Scout Group was established as an option for children like her own who weren’t interested in traditional after-school activities such as football, netball and basketball.

The team is presently organising a cultural talk to connect youth to country and seeking further sponsorship to help get the children out on their adventures.

“It gets myself and the kids out of the house and facing a different challenge each meeting,” she said.

“We have a diverse group of children from the schools here in Kununurra, so it gives the children and the leaders the ability to learn new skills as well as forming new bonds within the community.”

All volunteers need to do to join is have a police check clearance and a working with children card. For more phone 0478 149 925 or email kununurrascoutsgroupd@gmail.com.
